Forum: GratefulDead Subject: It's All Over Now, Baby Blue...

by Bob Dylan

Played by the Grateful Dead a number of times, it was actually one of their longest tenured cover songs, first played in 1966, last played in 1994.

recommended versions...

09-16-1966 Avalon Ballroom--early version (the first one was in May, I believe), pig on organ...

02-24-1974 Winterland Arena--the date is in dispute as this version is often listed as a soundcheck or as an encore or from 02-22-1974...slower than '66 naturally...

Peronally I never cared for it, but then again... Yes there are versions of every song where it may have worked out quite well & sounded great, but it may not have been something I'd wanted to hear in person. Heard it as an encore @ my 1st show--10/19/89 @ The Spectrum--and was disappointed. Though the show as a whole was rather incredible---at least through the fog of time & chemicals. I maybe heard it 3 times total, and can recall not caring for any of the performances.

The '66 Baby Blues are very interesting. Funny enough, I was just listening to the very 1966 Baby Blue you recommended! It's very refreshing because I'm used to all of the 1980s and later dylan covers, and the boys have such a different take on the tune in their early days. Almost like a bluesy Baby Blue, which sounds bizzare at first, but works so well.

my interest in this song comes and goes, when im into it i really dig it though, last week this one sparked my interest again, Bobs playin some grungy licks throughout that add some dynamic to this particular version.

Thanks strat.

I like the New Years '84. I can't find a nice recording though.

Stratocaster
I really liked that tune when Jerry sang it, there is so much imagery with that tune. But I think it suffered in the later years when it became part of the standard rotation. I will check out your links!
